The Straight T Formation or "T Formation" is considered by most to the the precusor to most modern football formations.

This formation was made famous in the 1930s - 1940s by the University of Minnesota, who used it to win 5 national titles.

When the Chicago Bears used the T-Formation in the 1940 NFL championship it marked the end of the single-wing formation at all levels.

By taking advantage of the three running backs an offense can run a variety of straight ahead runs, outside lead plays and multiple mis-direction plays.

If you like old school, powerhouse football then the Straight T Formation may be for you, but you better make sure you have a strong offensive line and some reliable ball carriers. This is a rush centric offensive formation and passing options are minimal.

The upside is that if you have the right personel you can run the ball right at your opponent and they will struggle to stop you.

Although the defense would be safe to bet your going to run the ball, they can't possibly defend all of the gaps and blocking combinations the T formation creates.

By utilizing all three running backs as the primary back, lead blocker and decoy at one point or another the defense will be guessing as to who will be getting the ball next. After some success with the power attack you can utilize misdirection plays to really open up the defense.
